FINE ARTS SERIES 2008

I BELIEVE!
A MUSIC MINISTRY CONCERT

  Sunday, March 2 • at 4:00 p.m.

First Presbyterian Church is blessed with many talented, dedicated musicians. These fine musicians are featured in concert for the opening of the 2008 concert series. Children, youth, and adults join together for an afternoon of great music. Featured choirs include the children’s choirs in grades 1 – 5 (Genesis and Emmaus Choirs); the youth choir (GAP & APEX); the Chancel Choir (adult); the Northville Concert Chorale (adult); the adult praise band “New Song”; the TeDeum Handbell Choir (adult); and the children and youth handbell choirs.

“I BELIEVE” is the theme for this concert. This theme will be heard in all the music.  The Northville Concert Corale will sing Robert Ray's "Gospel Mass".   This multi-movement work is written in jazz/gospel style with drums, string bass and piano as its accompaniment.  Its center movement is based on the Apostles Creed (I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and Earth ...).  The music is sure to set your toes tapping and your spirit uplifted (and maybe even your hands clapping along!).

The church has much to celebrate. It recently celebrated 175 years of ministry in downtown Northville. The church was founded in 1829. Music has played a vital role in the history of this church. One of its musical hallmarks is the annual performance of Handel’s “Messiah” which goes back over 60 years.

So, come and celebrate with us! Enjoy the gifts of music made by those who serve the church in one of its fine choirs.

Handel’s “Messiah”

 Sunday, December 7 • 7:00pm

One of the world’s greatest composers is undoubtedly George Frideric Handel. Born in Germany, he became an international composer and resided for most of his adult life in Italy and England. He is buried in Westminster Cathedral in London where a great statue of him stands as an enduring tribute to this gifted musician. Handel and Johann Sebastian Bach are two of the Baroque period’s outstanding composers.
Handel’s most popular and enduring work is his oratorio based on the life of Jesus Christ, “Messiah”. The Northville Concert Chorale presents this magnificent choral work each December to a full house. The chorus is accompanied by organ, harpsichord, and the Michigan Sinfonietta Orchestra of Ann Arbor. Professional soloists sing the solo roles.
The audience will hear such “Messiah” favorites such as “For Unto Us A Child Is Born”; “And The Glory of The Lord”, the “Hallelujah” chorus; “I Know That My Redeemer Livith”, “The Trumpet Shall Sound”, and “Worthy Is The Lamb That Was Slain”. The powerful “Amen” chorus ends the oratorio.
